Zach and Chris working on the deck. Students spent 20 hours/week working for the camp (anything from digging fire pits to weed-wacking, to cleaning bathrooms.) We were so impressed with their servant-hearts towards work (even when it was 90* and they were working from 12:30-5:30)

The "Chiquita Ladies". Each student was put on a team with a theme verse and color (as determined by their team leader). The Chiquita Ladies theme was "fruit of the spirit" from Galatians 5:22-23. Teams lived together, worked together, did Bible Study together and had lots of fun together too :)

Although it wasn't a key focus of the program this year, students took off in scripture memory. They made up a "cup game" where after each meal they would stack their cups & the student who ended up with them would quote one verse for each cup they had stacked in front of them. The record: 49 verses!

We were privileged to have several special guests (from the region and otherwise) come and speak to the students. Pictured is Jim Downing (98), Pearl Harbor veteran and the oldest living Navigator. Students were so eager to get time with him, soaking up wisdom from Jim as he has walked with the Lord for decades. Click here if you'd like to hear some messages from Jim over the years.

Julie, Evie, Korinne, Alyssa & Bekah (all the female team leaders) preparing for their Bible Studies and one-on-ones. Katie and my primary role was training the 9 team leaders (older students serving at Spring Hill as the shepherds of their teams). We led team leader training 2x week and met 1-1 with each team leader who in turn met 1-1 weekly with each of their 3 or 4 team members.

Katie has also posted a personal update from Spring Hill on our blog.
Coming this summer...
Katie and I have been asked to direct this year’s Spring Hill Summer Training Program (May 9-June 2). We have been praying, preparing, and inviting students from campuses around Illinois and Indiana to join us for an intense three weeks of studying and learning from God’s Word, growing in fellowship, sharing the gospel, and helping a Christian summer camp prepare for its gospel ministry to children from Indiana and around the Midwest.
We helped staff this program two years ago under the direction of good friends from Ball State University, (who will be joining us again this year!) but are finding new challenges and new opportuniites as we are directing the program this year. We have been reading through many student applications and wrestled through questions such as ‘who should we invite to speak?’ ‘what will the content of the Bible Studies be?’ ‘where will we host Jim Downing, a 98 year old veteran staff who will be joining us for a few days?’ and ‘how in the world do we pack for a month at camp with a one year old?’ Yes, it’s hard to believe, but Ellie will turn 1 on April 25th! (She loves finger foods, playing with her drum set, getting tickled, and finding a way to roll and reach to get to where she wants to go). From May 9-June 2nd, we will be living in cabins at SpringHill Camp in Seymour, IN. Katie and I will be overseeing the logistics of the program, teaching and training our student team leaders, and shepherding the group of students participating. Please pray for us in the upcoming weeks. |
